Sorry to harp on about the TDi again but I had the good fortune of being able to take my car around the bowl at Millbrook yesterday, I set the cruise at 100mph and did 10 miles with an average fuel consumption of 35.7mpg....... think I could have got more as the variable rate was flicking around 30-40mpg depending on the wind on whichever side of the bowl.

When I went to Cornwall last week I got over 600 miles from a tank of diesel. That was a 306 mile drive down and the rest running around when there.

Oh and was family, luggage etc. on the way down.

Divide your horsepower by your mpg then the petrol looks better! Meaningless figure but who cares!

bhp.gallons/mile. Like it. You could always convert it to kilogram litre metres per cubic second, of course.

I'm getting about 8 bhp.gallons/mile (about 17 tonne.m.l/cubic second), I think.

you'll need to factor in wind resistance at surface area squared up to 60mph and cubed over 100mph
